  16. <p>    McCaw Cellular Communications is already the largest
  17. operator in the seven-year-old cellular-telephone business,
  18. controlling franchise areas with more than 50 million residents
  19. throughout 127 small and medium-size markets across the U.S.
  20. Last week the company sought to build up its metropolitan
  21. business by making a $5.9 billion bid for New York City's LIN
  22. Broadcasting, which reaches 18 million potential phone
  23. subscribers in such major cities as New York, Los Angeles and
  24. Dallas.

  26. <p>    For Craig McCaw, the 39-year-old chairman of the company,
  27. which is based in Kirkland, Wash., the bid for LIN caps a
  28. stunning sprint of growth. Since 1973, McCaw has parlayed a
  29. backwater cable-TV franchise into a cellular firm with annual
  30. revenues of $311 million.
